Hotel WiFi is famously unreliable — speeds can vary wildly, passwords are frustratingly long, and your room might be in a dead zone. But with the right knowledge and a few tricks, you can dramatically improve your connectivity experience at any hotel.
Getting the WiFi Password
Hotel WiFi passwords are typically provided at:
- The key card sleeve you receive at check-in
- On a small card placed on the room's desk
- As a sticker on the router in your room (if visible)
- The TV welcome screen or in-room tablet
- On the hotel's app (for major chains)
If you can't find it, the front desk will always provide it — don't hesitate to ask. For frequent guests, community databases like GetWifi often have hotel WiFi passwords that other guests have shared.
Choosing the Right Room for Best WiFi
Room location significantly affects WiFi quality. For the best signal:
- Lower floors near the lobby often have stronger signal, as routers are typically installed in hallways and the lobby infrastructure is most robust
- Rooms closer to the network closet (usually near the elevator banks on each floor) have better signal
- Avoid corner rooms and end-of-corridor rooms — these are furthest from access points
- Upper floors in high-rises sometimes have dedicated access points — ask at check-in if you need strong connectivity
When booking, many hotels list their WiFi speeds or quality on booking sites. Look for guest reviews mentioning connectivity.
Improving Your Hotel Room Connection
Position Matters
Place your laptop or phone near the room's router (usually visible on the wall or ceiling), or even closer to the door which is typically nearer to the hallway access point.
Travel Router Trick
A compact travel router (GL.iNet, TP-Link, or similar) can transform a single hotel wired ethernet connection into a personal WiFi hotspot with better speeds and security. Many hotels still have wired ethernet ports despite not advertising them. A travel router plugs into that port and creates your own private network.
Use the Business Centre
Most business hotels have a business centre with wired computers and dedicated high-speed connections. Even if you don't use their computers, sitting near the business centre often puts you in range of faster, less congested WiFi.
Major Hotel Chain WiFi Policies
Marriott
Marriott offers free WiFi to all Bonvoy loyalty members (free to join). Standard guests may be charged in some properties. Elite members get access to the faster premium network at no extra charge.
Hilton
Hilton offers free standard WiFi to Honors members. The Honors app allows seamless digital check-in and room key, and the WiFi password is often available through the app before arrival.
Hyatt
World of Hyatt members receive complimentary WiFi. Elite members get enhanced speeds. The Hyatt app allows you to request an early connection before you physically arrive at the hotel.
When Hotel WiFi Isn't Enough
For important video calls or large file transfers, hotel WiFi often isn't reliable enough. Alternatives:
- Mobile hotspot: Your phone's personal hotspot, especially on a local SIM, often outperforms hotel WiFi
- Travel router with local SIM: Insert a local data SIM into a travel router for a private, faster connection
- Nearby coffee shop: Many Starbucks and Costa locations near major hotels offer faster WiFi than the hotel itself
